End Date: March 2026 (with possibility of extension pending funding renewal)
Hours of Work: Full-time (35 hours/week)
Reports To: Skilled Trades Coordinator
Pay Rate: $43.21 per hour (Instructor) / $33.25 per hour (Assistant)
The Trades Instructor/Assistant Instructor, Machining provides theoretical and practical instruction for the Machining sections of programming for pre-apprenticeship and skills training programs.
These are your responsibilities:
Customer Service Skills:
- Committed to student success as demonstrated by exemplary teaching practices and practicing continuous improvement.
- Sharing Best Practices in teaching with other instructors.
- Taking a team approach to working the Skilled Trades Department – attending all staff meetings, volunteering for additional projects when required.
- Communicating efficiently by email on a daily basis with the administrative team, vendors, and students.
Instructional Skills:
- Responsible for preparing and implementing short-term and long-term lesson plans to meet Ministry curriculum and contract expectations.
- Follow adult education principles for student communication and training delivery.
- Responsible for all aspects of student assessment and evaluation, including, student reporting.
- Promote, teach and practice safety and orderliness on a daily basis.
- Monitor and record student attendance.
- Ensure that all department documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner.
The Opportunity
- Work closely with the program team to strategize toward the common goal of student success.
- Adapt instructional strategies and materials according to the individual learning needs of each student.
- Work closely with teaching partners and assistant instructors to develop and deliver quality programming.
- Ensure all shop tools and equipment are in working order; conduct basic repairs, as needed, or report problems to the Skilled Trades Coordinator.
- Assist Skilled Trades Coordinator in creating material and supply orders for class and shop.
What you need to bring to this job:
- Technical/Theoretical Knowledge Required:
- Machine and Hand tools, Threads and Fasteners
- Machine Theory, Blueprint Reading
- Computer Numerical Control / CNC
- CNC Vertical milling machine setup and operation
- CNC Lathe setup and operation
- Conventional vertical milling machine and lathe setup and operation
- Trades Math, Measurement
- Advanced troubleshooting techniques in all areas of study
- Safety Training and Safe Work Practice is a must
- Employability / Essential Skills
Additional Qualifications:
- Machinist/Tool and Die Maker Certificate of Qualifications.
- 5+ years of field experience.
- Experience teaching in an adult education setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated interest and experience in work with adults with barriers to employment.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR considered an asset.
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, listening).
- Intermediate level of computer skills using MS Office 365 (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Able to facilitate online classes using Zoom or MS Teams as needed.
