Job Interview, Common Trick Questions

Oct 30, 2024

Ever wondered why some interview questions are difficult and catch you off guard? In today’s article, Centre for Skills Development’s Employment Specialist, Klara Kabelik, will provide you with some Trick or Treat tips for this spooky season.

Trick: Tell me a little bit about yourself…

Treat: This question is not intended to inquire about your life story. Rather, it is targeting your previous experience whether based in your academic studies, or employment, to showcase how what you did in the past is relevant to this position.

Trick: What are some of your strengths?

Treat: This is a chance for you to focus on one of your skills, that is identified in the job posting. An example would be for the position of an “Office Assistant”. In this role, if the employer is looking for skills such as “Interpersonal Communication” or “Customer Service”, you should go into detail, providing scenarios where you were successfully able to address any questions or concerns of a client, either in-person, via email, or over-the-phone.

Trick: What is one of your weaknesses?

Treat: In this circumstance, you want your answer to end on a positive note. For instance: “Sometimes I take a little bit longer to complete a task, but in the end, I make sure to produce excellent quality in my work, and still submit the assignment before the deadline.” In this scenario, the bolded part of the sentence indicates a weakness, while the rest of the phrase ends in a positive manner, transforming your weakness into another strength.

On behalf of Centre for Skills, we wish you a Happy Halloween! May these tricks and treats be our gift to you on this chilling night!
