How to Write the “Perfect” Resume

There are many factors that play a role in the process of searching for work, especially when it comes to finding a job that suits your needs and being able to support others in your life.  Your resume is usually the first marketing tool that you have to introduce yourself to prospective employers, so you want to ensure it is crafted well. Let's examine some “do’s” and “don’ts” that you should consider when creating this important document.

DO:

  • Tailor your resume to the specific job posting; highlight your past education, skills and experiences that the posting requests.
  • Use keywords in your resume that mirror the keywords in the job posting. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are often programmed to scan your resume for these keywords to see if there is a match between what the employer requires and what you can offer.
  • Include Accomplishment Statements – using numbers, percentages etc. to clearly demonstrate how you have brought value to your previous companies – how did you save them time and money?
  • Maintain consistent formatting, font, and font sizing throughout your resume.
  • Organize your information in a way that’s easy to read; bullet points usually work best!

DON’T:

  • Include experiences that are outdated by more than ten years – this might vary based on application requirements and individual needs.
  • Emphasize skills that are entirely unrelated to the role – for example, there is no need to focus on your experience as a line cook if you are applying to be a marketing specialist!
  • Use various fonts sizes and colours or select a font that is difficult to read – and always remember to use spellcheck!
  • Include a picture of yourself, or personal information such as date of birth, marriage status or S.I.N.
  • Use long paragraphs to organize minimal amounts of information.

Witing a resume is the first, and sometimes the hardest step, of making your way into the modern job market. The importance of writing what employers see as the “perfect resume” can get you one step closer towards the job of your dreams, just by knowing what they want to read. In sum, the “perfect resume” might not exist, but understanding how to write a resume based on the job application you’re aiming for might work out perfectly for you.
