Start the New Year with new Connections and New Skills

Jan 16, 2023

As a newcomer, you chose Canada for a fresh start for your family, but that fresh start comes with challenges. You may be feeling isolated, disconnected from your new community, bored and perhaps even stuck with no computer literacy or English conversation skills.

Settling in Canada is not always easy, and newcomers need support along the way and Canada knows this. It has funded community programs in many local agencies, such as here at the Centre for Skills Development in Halton. Our Settlement program offers Community Connections programs for free to Newcomers looking for support and connections, why not start the new year with a new program?

Do you need basic digital/computer skills but need support while you learn? We have a free program for that! Our free Computer Literacy training program can help you feel confident in using a computer and the internet at a basic skills level.

Are you a Senior and feeling isolated and disconnected from people in your community? Do you want to make new friends and practice your English skills? Check out our free Conversation Circles located in Oakville and Burlington Libraries. Joining these conversation circles will help you make friends in your community, improve your English and learn more about day-to-day life in Canada. Our circles are in English, French, and Ukrainian.

Our Social Club on Thursday or Friday mornings is the perfect way to spend a morning. You can learn new skills for a new hobby, make new friends and improve your mood and well-being by socializing with other newcomers, some who are well-established and ready to support you while you enjoy each week’s new and free activity.

Sometimes newcomer families need help in managing the challenges in raising their families in a new culture while trying to work to support their families. Our Parenting Support group offers a safe and friendly group for newcomers to discuss challenges they and their families face, share tips and resources and learn new strategies from experts on how to raise resilient children.

Not sure? Read this note written by one of our satisfied newcomers:

"I'm very happy to start the computer class. This center is very active. Its atmosphere is very friendly and the programs of this center are very attractive and practical. Thank you for everything, and see you soon! Gratefully yours,

Mahvash"
