Job Loss – How to Turn the Page

December 4, 2025 Uncategorized Marcella Jager

Losing a job can feel like a nice cozy rug has been pulled out from under you and you’re now lying on the hard cold floor. Sure, it’s about the loss in pay, but it’s also about the sudden shift in identity, purpose, and daily routine. Many people experience a cycle of emotions that reflect the stages of grief: shock, sadness, frustration, even apathy or isolation. These reactions are completely natural—and temporary. Feel the grief and acknowledge the loss, but don’t get stuck in this cycle. How? The following might help.

Reframe the Narrative

It’s okay to feel disoriented.  But while job loss is undeniably challenging, it can also be a powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and redirect.

Start by being kind to yourself. Instead of slipping into self-blame or doubt, focus on your strengths and accomplishments. Write down the things you’ve achieved, the qualities and skill sets that reflect your superpowers. Yes, you have them! Remember: your job may be gone, but your value is not. Don’t allow yourself to get stuck in the narrative of loss.

Take Practical Steps

Once you’re feeling more grounded, begin addressing the essentials:

  • Secure your Record of Employment
  • Apply for Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Review your severance package
  • If necessary, meet with a financial advisor to understand your timeline and budget

These steps will provide stability while you explore your next move.

Explore New Possibilities

This could be the moment to make a change. Is there a field you’ve always wanted to enter? A skill you’ve wanted to sharpen? Consider both short- and long-term goals, and create a step-by-step plan with realistic timelines.

There are many micro-credentials that can teach you new skills without needing to begin all over again. You could re-start your career that leverages your hard-earned skills together with your new micro-skills in a fresh new way.

Check out MicroLearnOntario which enables you to connect your current skills with in-demand micro-credentials in your industry or in a new one.

Lean on Community

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Join a Job Finding Club, connect with a support group, or simply meet with a friend. Re-connect with professionals on LinkedIn – get ideas from their profiles – you are not the only one who has had to re-start again. Staying socially connected can help maintain your energy and optimism.

You can also connect with an employment specialist at the Centre for Skills. We have offices in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington and Milton.
