Skilled Trades Exploration for Newcomers

Hi Richard,

I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to reach out to stay in touch and also to express my appreciation for all your guidance during the Machining for Newcomers program.

Your detailed way of teaching — especially the step-by-step explanations of the machines, safe operation, and precision techniques — made a huge difference in my understanding. The hands-on coaching on milling, drilling, lathe operation, measuring tools, and setups gave me confidence I never had before working with machinery.

One of the highlights for me was building the portable V-block clamp from scratch. That project taught me patience, accuracy, and respect for the machining process. I’ve attached a couple of photos as a small reminder that your teaching has left a real and valuable impact.

I also wanted to share a quick update — I am now working as an Automotive Service Advisor at Canadian Tire. Even though my role is customer-facing, the machining skills and mechanical understanding I gained from your coaching help me every day when speaking with technicians, interpreting repair notes, and explaining mechanical work to customers in a clear way. The technical foundation you helped build has made me more confident and effective in my role.
