Job Title: Skilled Trades Shop Assistant
Department: Skilled Trades
Location: Burlington
Contract Length: July 6, 2026 to August 28, 2026 (8 weeks)
Schedule: Full-time (35 hours per week)
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm
Reports To: Program Coordinator
Salary: $17.60 per hour

These are your responsibilities:
-Materials Handling & Inventory Management
-Receive incoming materials and supplies, verifying shipments against purchase orders and delivery slips.
-Organize, label, and store materials appropriately across all trades program areas.
-Maintain accurate inventory levels for all programs, including developing and updating tracking systems.
-Use computer systems to record inventory, track usage, and identify purchase needs. -Liaise with instructors to confirm upcoming material requirements and support the ordering process.
Shop Operations & Trade- Specific Support
-Prepare workshops for daily classes by laying out required materials, hand tools, and equipment.
-Perform routine shop clean-up and ensure learning spaces are reset and secured at the end of each day.
-Report any health and safety concerns promptly to the designated staff member.
-Provide hands-on support in each trades area as needed, including:
-Machine Shop: Cutting and preparing metal materials for student projects; assisting with measuring, cutting, and other basic shop tasks.
Construction: Supporting shop set-up and material preparation.
-Electrical: Assisting with shop clean-up and organization.
-Conduct quality-control checks of hand tools and power tools to ensure they are in safe, working condition.
-Perform basic machine and equipment maintenance under staff guidance.
Program & Instructor Support
-Assist instructors with preparing materials and setting up for class activities and guest speakers.
-Support the marking of basic trades projects as directed by instructors.
-Act as a liaison between program administration and instructors by communicating scheduling updates, program changes, and material verification needs.
What you bring to this job:
-Under Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) guidelines, to be eligible, applicants must:
-Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of their summer job.
-Be a Canadian citizen,
permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the period.
-Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a work team
-Excellent customer service skills; friendly, approachable and welcoming interpersonal style
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
-Ability to be non-judgmental and show empathy when dealing with diverse range of clientele; while also maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
-Strong research and professional writing skills
-Proficient with MS Office applications: Word, Excel and Outlook
-Past experience in a similar role will be considered an asset
-Willingness to travel throughout Halton and Peel regions on occasion
