The duties of a Labourer vary widely. Work includes using a variety of power and hand tools. This position is required to work outside in all types of weather. Proper care is essential to this role, as some tasks are inherently dangerous or involve working with, near or beside heavy equipment, deep water and/or chemicals.

Responsibilities

General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs varied types of work connected with the various projects undertaken by Toronto Port Authority.
  • Must be able to work in a marine environment.
  • Must adhere to all Toronto Port Authority’s policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with all Health and Safety policies, procedures, SOPs and legislated requirements.
  • Must wear designated safety equipment (PPE).
  • Type of work includes, but is not limited to, heavy labour, construction and repair, maintenance, harbour cleaning, bridge operation, painting and preparation of outside structures, etc.
  • Perform outdoor seasonal duties such as general garden maintenance (lawns and flower beds), snow removal, etc.
  • Other related duties assigned by the Toronto Port Authority.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers License; Class “D” or “DZ” would be a definite asset.
  • Valid Forklift Certification would be a definite asset.
  • Possess a recognized First Aid Certificate is recommended.

Abilities

  • Must have experience in construction and/or marine labour.
  • Must be able to work independently as at times will have limited supervision.
  • Must have good command of English, including reading, writing, and speaking clearly.
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to climb and work at varying heights.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 Kgs (50 Lbs) floor to waist.
  • Must be able to swim and tread water for two (2) minutes is recommended.

Conditions

  • Criminal record check will be conducted on hire.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours as the need arises.
  • Able to work all shifts including overnight, weekends and holidays.
  • Annual driver’s license validity check.
  • Annual basic fitness evaluation.

Hours of Work

This role works 7 ½ hour days, 5 days per week. Shift work, weekends and holidays may be required.
