Machining for Newcomers
Pathway to Work (PTW) is a free program designed to help newcomers with international skilled trades experience successfully transition into Ontario’s growing manufacturing sector.
By bridging the gap between foreign training and Canadian apprenticeship recognition, Pathway to Work provides tailored support for internationally trained tradespeople pursuing careers as Machinists (429A).
The program equips participants with the knowledge, resources, and connections they need to gain recognition for their skills, access apprenticeship pathways, and build rewarding careers in Canada’s skilled trades.
Program Details:
- Program starts November 2025
- Program length: 10 weeks of full time hands-on, in person training and 8 weeks of paid work experience with local employers, leading to long-term employment/apprenticeships.
- Schedule: Day class: 8:30-3:00, Afternoon class: 12:00 – 6:30
- Location: 3335 North Service Rd., Burlington, ON L7N 3G2
This program is right for you if…
- You are Internationally trained newcomer with prior work/education in manufacturing trades.
- You have achieved a Canadian Language Benchmark Level 6+
- You are interested in working in the manufacturing industry
- You are interested in working as a machinist in Canada

- Machine Theory & Practice
- Trade Calculation, Math & Science

- Safety Certifications: First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Lockout/Tagout, Working at Heights
- Trade-specific language training (with an onsite language trainer for 50% of program)

Eligibility
To qualify for a Machining for Newcomers – Pathway to Work program you must:
- Have international training / education relevant to manufacturing industry
- Have at least two years of work experience outside Canada in the trades
- You must not be in full time education or employment.
- Naturalized Canadian Citizens
- Permanent Residents
- Approved Provincial Nominees
- Asylum Claimants – with a 900-series Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an open work permit.
- Work Permit Holders – who meet the requirements for permanent residence.
- Reside in Ontario
Additional Supports
- Individualized career action plans
- Settlement and language supports (in-house services)
- Ongoing job coaching, retention, and follow-up for up to 12 months
- Help navigating apprenticeship registration and Trades Equivalency Assessment exam prep
