Enhanced Language Training for Personal Support Workers

Centre for Skills offers specialized language training for newcomers preparing to enter the Canadian workplace.

 

This 12-week online course helps internationally trained individuals and newcomer jobseekers learn Canadian workplace culture, communication skills, job-search strategies, and the specific language needed for a career as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) or Support Aide.

This program is for you if:

  • You are internationally trained or skilled with experience in a healthcare field or industry.
  • You have a desire to work as a Personal Support Worker (PSWs) and Support Aide in long-term care, home care, and community support settings.
  • You want an orientation to the Canadian workplace & culture.
  • You want to improve English workplace communications skills to transition into formal PSW certificate programs or related employment

The Enhanced Language Training team consists of your OCELT certified instructor who will teach classes as well as provide one-on-one coaching with the assistance of a Newcomer Career Specialist who will guide you one-on-one in customizing your resume and cover letter for applications as well as give workshops. Our Enhanced Language Training program will provide you with access to possible job leadsnetworking connectionsprofessional mentorship and volunteer opportunities to enhance your chances of finding employment in your field.

Monday to Thursday:
9:30 AM – 12:00 PM – Zoom class
12:00 PM to 2:30 PM – Independent study

Friday:
Independent study, Assignments,

  • Communicating skills with clients and families  
  • Communicating with supervisors and interdisciplinary teams 
  • Conflict resolution & assertive communication 
  • De-escalation basics  
  • Equity, diversity, inclusion 
  • Professional boundaries & privacy
  • Vocabulary for daily care tasks  
  • Writing notes and behavior observations  
  • Resume and cover letter tailored to healthcare support roles
  • Interview preparation (scenario-based, behavioural questions)
  • Job search strategies: LTC homes, home-care agencies, retirement residences
  • Understanding job postings & requirements
  • PSW certificate programs
  • In home or community support aide training programs
  • Volunteer roles in healthcare environments

Eligibility

  • Must have a valid and up to date CLB skill level assessment 4/5 + (if you do not have this, we can book an assessment for you)
  • Adult immigrants (18+) who are residents of Ontario
  • Permanent residents and convention refugees

Program Details

  • Enhanced Language Training is a full time, 12-week program for Permanent Residents and Convention Refugees. 
  • Our ELT program is considered to be a full-time commitment. In order to complete all required assignments and activities successfully, we do not advise taking other courses or working during your daytime or evening course hours.
  • For all our online classes, learners are expected to use a computer or laptop with a functional camera turned on during class.
