Workplace Language Training – Skilled Trades Exploration for Newcomers

Skilled Trades Exploration for Newcomers is a free, 8-week workplace language training program for newcomers interested in exploring careers in Ontario’s construction sector.

 

The program includes six weeks of online, job-specific language training to help participants build the English communication skills needed for the workplace, followed by two weeks of in-person, hands-on skilled trades exploration at our Skilled Trades Centre in Burlington. Participants also receive job search support to help them explore employment opportunities and plan their next steps.

 

We are now accepting applications for October 2026.

  • Exploring basic construction concepts and workplace practices
  • Learning about health and safety in construction workplaces
  • Completing Working at Heights training
  • Completing First Aid & CPR training
  • Applying workplace English and construction terminology in a practical setting

Participants receive job search support to help them explore employment opportunities in Ontario’s construction sector and plan their next career steps.

  • Connections with employers and employment resources

Who Is Eligible for Skilled Trades Exploration for Newcomers?

To participate, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Live in Ontario and be able to attend the in-person portion in Burlington
  • Have a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 4 or higher

Eligible Immigration Status

  • Naturalized Canadian citizens, permanent residents, convention refugees or refugee claimants.
  • VISA Permit holders admitted under a federal caregiver program with a pathway to permanent residency.

Skilled Trades Exploration Program Details

  • Program length: 8 weeks
  • Language training: 6 weeks online
  • Hands-on skilled trades exploration: 2 weeks in person
  • In-person location: Skilled Trades Centre, 3335 North Service Road, Burlington ON L7N 3M6
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
