Oasis Youth Care Programs is a community-based organisation that exists to empower vulnerable and at-risk youth (16-29) from racialized communities around the Halton/Peel region to overcome barriers to adult independence by providing transitional support services in three main areas:(1) Housing (2) Life Skills/Coaching and (3) Mentoring.

The Transition Youth Support Worker is responsible for providing support and supervision to youth residents of the Oasis Youth Transitional Home - The Oasis House. Youth workers will be expected to model a collaborative, cooperative approach focused on the personal, social, cultural and educational development of the residents. Staff will be expected to practice within a framework that is a strength-based, forward-looking philosophy of care along with a belief in the resilience of youth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure warm welcome of residents, conduct intake interviews of potential residents, provide effective orientation for new residents and redirect admissions, when appropriate.
  • Familiarize youth with housing program rules and expectations. Ensure that all administrative duties are completed and entered into the database at the time of intake.
  • Connect youth to resources and community support networks; assist youth with building needed life skills and working towards permanent housing goals. Promote life coaching for building skills helpful for becoming a successful independent adult.
  •  Ensure the safety and well-being of the residents by providing effective crisis intervention following appropriate procedures. Promptly address behavioural issues and consult with the team and program manager if need be.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the transitional housing program facility. Keep all programming areas clean, tidy and safe. Identify and respond to maintenance issues related to the building. Documents, according to professional standards, all significant interaction with residents; maintains appropriate documentation in case files and logs; completes incident reports, police reports, safety plans and medical feedback forms.
  • Participates in individual supervision meetings. Actively contributes to the Program’s Strategic Plan by participating in initiatives and committees to support the overall Support Plan for resident youth. Participate in all mandatory professional training provided by the Program.
  • Plans and facilitates individual and group therapeutic programs, such as sports activities, life skills, outings, games and other valuable activities.
  • Communicates with service providers, including doctors and therapists, recreational workers, teachers and counsellors, clergy, lawyers, caseworkers and governmental service providers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-Secondary qualification in Child & Youth Work, Social Work or equivalent in a related field
  • Minimum experience must include at least one field practicum placement as a front-line worker in a residential, housing, or shelter setting.
  • Experience working with at-risk adolescents from a strength-based approach.
  • Capacity to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds

  • Capacity to work efficiently within a multidisciplinary team 
  • Strong ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proficiency in English, written and oral
  • Demonstrates an egalitarian philosophy and non-judgmental attitude (i.e.: sensitivity to diversity, poverty and minority issues)
  • Strong computer skills
  • Available to work a flexible schedule
  • Must be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check
